Sandgate Beach joins the list of ‘Seaside Award’ winners

seaside_award_2013The Parish of Sandgate is now the proud holder of a “Seaside Award’ as judged by the ‘Keep Britain Tidy organisation. It is the only beach in Shepway awarded this year. Councillors, businesses, members of the local community and officers at Shepway District Council have worked together to achieve this prestigious award.

To be successful, the Sandgate community had to demonstrate its commitment to providing a high quality beach environment for residents and visitors. The beach management group wanted to use the village’s greatest amenity – the beach – to boost tourism in the area. Good beach access, toilet facilities, access to first aid, parking, clean beaches, high water quality, a beach management plan, an emergency plan and general cleanliness and tidiness of the area all had to be evidenced.

Sandgate will continue to illustrate its commitment to providing a high quality experience for all in this bijoux coastal village.

A Senior Reviewer on Trip Advisor commented on last year’s Christmas Day lunch as follows:

“We had Christmas Dinner at the Sandgate Hotel, what made us book here was the staff. We had Sunday Lunch there in October and the staff was the best we have come across in the UK. Today was great the food was good and again the staff was again on top form. We are looking at going back nex Christmas and even going to the New Years Eve party and staying the night to late this year as all the rooms booked”.

Sample the original Pilsner

Pilsner Urquell, The original Pilsner since 1842Discover the Original Pilsner from Pilsen at 18:42!

Discover the Original Pilsner from Pilsen at 18:42! Ambassadors will be on hand to share our rich heritage and offer out complimentary half pints allowing you to savour the taste of the world’s first golden beer. And why will they be there at 18:42? Because that’s the year Pilsner Urquell was first produced.

In 1842, Josef Groll brewed the  world’s first golden beer and revolutionized an entire industry. Pilsner  Urquell, translated as “original source,” remains a revered beer, both  for its importance in beer history, as well as its intricate brewing  process, including the use of soft water, Saaz hops, pale malts, and triple  decoction.

“All brewers are passionate  about their beer, but Pilsner Urquell takes it one step further” – Charlie Boorman, The Times

Combination of draught beverages and food

On draught…

Most people think of having wine with their meal however draught lager and cider is an alternative worth tasting.

Aspall Cyder

For sweet yet savoury dishes Aspall Draught Suffolk Cyder served on tap is a great choice. We used to sell a different cider but felt it was time for a change. Gone is the very sweet cider that cries out to be diluted with ice to be replaced with the delicate flavour of fresh pressed Russett apples. Aspall Draught Cyder is “off dry” with a complexity that enhances its long finish. It’s served perfectly chilled and in beautiful glasses. Try the draught cider that recently won the Quality Drinks Award where it was described as ‘almost like drinking a Sauvignon Blanc’.

Peroni

Peroni Nastro Azzurro is the best-selling Italian premium lager worldwide, with its distinctive, intensely crisp and refreshing character. Brewed in Italy since 1963 and available in the most stylish bars and restaurants across the UK, Peroni Nastro Azzurro captures the Italian spirit: a passion for life, authenticity and quality. Everything from Peroni Nastro Azzurro’s distinctive look, matchless taste and pride in its heritage reflects this unique quality. That’s the offical blurb, all true, but the best thing abount Peroni served chilled to perfection is it looks stylish, tastes great and goes down perfectly with fish and other light dishes. Peroni with fish and chips is a top seller at The Sandgate Hotel.

Pilsner Urquell

The final draught we’d like to draw your attention to is Pilsner Urquell. With a distinctive bittersweet, full-bodied taste, Pilsner Urquell is a great palate cleanser. Because of its rich flavor, Pilsner Urquell pairs well with robust dishes that would otherwise overpower most lagers. Meat dishes such as venison or duck and richer seafood such as crab, shrimp, herring or marinated salmon are strong enough to create a perfect balance with Pilsner Urquell’s intense hop presence; but don’t pair it with scallops or light white fish.

Pilsner Urquell has a terrific pedigree as THE original pilsner. It’s unique taste and quality stem from five golden rules: • Brewing process features local hops, barley and water along with the same strain of yeast used since 1842 • Triple decoction brewing process • Angled-flame heating in copper vessels • Matured for six weeks • Pilzen knowledge passed on through generations.

Of course it also looks fabulous in a tall slender glass with a large deep creamy foam on top.

All of the above are great by themselves but as you can see also go well with food. We also serve Guiness and Stella 4% on draught.

Pop in sometime for a pint and a bite to eat. You’ll find us on the coastal road between Folkestone and Hythe.

Olympic Torch passes The Sandgate Hotel on 18 July 2012

Olympic Torch relay through Sandgate

On Wednesday 18th July the Olympic torch passes between The Sandgate Hotel and the English Channel as it makes its way from Greece to London.

It is due to pass at approximately 1:30pm. Come along and cheer on the torchbearers and take part in this historic event.

Please be advised that there may be some parking restrictions along the route so it is best to arrive early. There are bus stops outside the hotel should you wish to take public transport.

You can enjoy a good drink, good food, good views at The Sandgate Hotel before and after the torch relay goes by. Weather permitting we’ll have a barbecue on the terrace as well as our regular menu on offer.

Sandgate Parish Council is organising a series of film presentations recorded in local schools with pupils talking about their involvement, enjoyment, participation in and ambitions for sport and the Olympics in 2012 and beyond, and made available to those schools as a lasting record and via the internet on YouTube. They are also creating a photo and film archive of the day which will ultimately be on display on the day at Chichester Hall, Sandgate.

Why not book a table on the terrace overlooking the Olympic torch route? Alternatively why not view the torch relay from a balcony overlooking the route from one of our balcony rooms? Book a room here or reserve a table below.

Live music this Sunday

Phil Trainor plays live miusic at The Sandgate HotelFolk, Irish, blues music at The Sandgate Hotel with Phil Trainor

Phil Trainor, originally from Belfast, is a relative newcomer to the music scene. In 2004 after playing guitar and singing in several bands as a hobby, he decided to make a living out of playing music and moved to Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca, Spain. A popular performer around the pub circuit, Phil is a multi instrumentalist and can turn his hand to most types of music from popular to his own material. Folk music however is Phil’s forte and Irish music in particular. He normally performs as a solo artist and delivers his material with a wicked sense of humour.

Folk music and Irish in particular remains Phil´s main influence although he does admit to being an audience driven entertainer.

His instruments include Guitar, Harmonica, Tin Whistle, Banjo Mandolin and Bodhran (Irish Drum).

Sample Phil playing below.

Our regular menu is on offer this Sunday together with a Sunday roast menu. Sit on the terrace and enjoy the sea views, listen in the bar or dine and listen in the restaurant. You can reserve a table below.
